Overview

St Michael le Belfrey (known as “The Belfrey”) is one of the most dynamic and influential churches in the North of England. Our calling is to serve God’s transformation of the North, particularly as a resource church. Our mission for the next few years is to Pray, Give & Grow. We have five established aims – to Serve York, Make Disciples, Nurture Disciples, Develop Leaders and Plant Churches.

We are effective in our calling because we seek Jesus first. Jesus said, ‘If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit.’ We are passionate about remaining in Jesus through the Holy Spirit in worship, prayer, studying the Bible, serving others, and living lives that honour Him.

Introduction

We are looking for an Interim Associate Minister to join us in 2024 for three years, at a hugely significant and exciting time in our history, as we embark on our project to renovate and reorder our 500-year-old church building, St Michael le Belfrey, which is located right next door to York Minster. This is an ordained position in the Diocese of York, with a stipend, expenses and housing in York included.

York is a city of wonder. A vibrant city, steeped in history from Vikings to chocolate makers, but very current; the home of innovative businesses, fantastic universities and is a Unesco city of media arts.

The Ideal Candidate

As the Interim Associate Minister, you will have significant responsibilities as part of your role. You will share in the delegated responsibility for the day-to-day management of the church and for developing vision and strategy. You will have the oversight of the pastoral ministry and our midweek “Belfrey Group” housegroups. You will be the leader of ‘The 9’, our first morning service on Sundays. You would be responsible for line managing and being an ambassador for employed staff members of our Counselling service, focusing on outreach-based ministries for children, youth and families ministries in York, alongside other organisations. You would be invited to bring your experience and vision for evangelism to help further develop Alpha, missional events and invitation events, alongside our parish evangelist.

If this excites you please see further details in our PARISH PROFILE and view our WEBSITE.

Details of how to apply and significant dates are shown below.

About us

The Diocese of York

The Diocese of York, led and guided by Archbishop Stephen Cottrell, takes in much of North and East Yorkshire. As the largest diocese in England, geographically, the area is very diverse, featuring a multitude of needs and opportunities. This includes the bustling urban centres of York, Hull and Middlesbrough, the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors National Park, and the incomparable Yorkshire Coast; as well as areas of deprivation in some of our urban and smaller rural and coastal communities.

Our mission and ministry relies on thousands of people - lay and ordained, volunteer and paid. Our diocesan teams provide a wide range of support services to our mission and ministry, including lifelong learning for ministry, the care of church buildings, and safeguarding. Together, we are striving to be a people who are ‘Living Christ’s Story’. We want to be a simpler, bolder, humbler church which in its diversity reflects the communities it serves. We are bringing renewed focus and fresh energy to achieving our aims:

  • Becoming more like Christ
  • Reaching those we currently don't
  • Growing in discipleship, influence and numbers
  • Transforming our finances and structures

Our approach is aligned with a commitment to the best of our parochial inheritance and to the poorest communities, and to the financial realities we face.

Under current immigration rules, it is not generally possible for us to appoint clergy who are not already eligible to work in the UK.

Do you think that God might be calling you to this role?  We would love to hear from you! If you would like to have an informal conversation about this post, please contact Revd Andy Baker, the Bishop of Selby, the Rt Revd John Thomson tel: 01757 429982, or the Archdeacon of York, Ven Sam Rushton 01904 758241

Appointment is subject to a satisfactory Enhanced DBS disclosure.
