Introduction

Vicar of St Philip’s, Reigate

OVERVIEW

St Philip’s, Reigate needs a supportive and collaborative vicar to serve this well-attended church, popular with young families and older parishioners alike and lead into its next chapter of growth and development. The successful candidate will embrace the traditional ‘mid-spectrum’ style of worship at St Philip’s but will take opportunities to develop ministries beyond Sunday services. With an inclusive and engaging preaching style, this person will bring the joy of the Gospel to everyone – both newcomers and the lifelong faithful.

INTRODUCTION

The Parish of St Philip’s is small, made up of less than 1000 households. More than half of our congregation come from other parishes around Reigate and Redhill to worship here. The Nutley Lane area has a village atmosphere but is only a short distance from the centre of town. The train station is nearby and many residents commute to London. The housing is mostly Victorian cottages running up to the Railway bridge which marks the northern boundary of the parish. But there are some larger properties on some connecting roads and many of the smaller ones have been extended to accommodate growing families. There is no school in the parish but many local children attend Reigate Priory Junior School which is situated in Priory Park nearby.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To continue the work of this popular church, preserving its place in the community
  • To communicate the teachings of God in an accessible and engaging way
  • To help retain more young people within the church, teenagers in particular but also their parents who tend to drift away during that life stage.
  • To encourage greater exploration of faith among all age groups and perhaps in settings outside of Sunday services
  • To steer the PCC and other volunteers at St Philip’s in delivering good stewardship of our buildings and finances and meeting our environmental commitments
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

Motivational – this person will lead the PCC and other church volunteers and encourage greater involvement in projects and activities from among the congregation. Expansion of the worship team is a key objective, and this will require a warm and nurturing approach.

  • Collaborative - with a heart for children and families, and an ability to work with neighbouring parishes to develop youth work for 10 to 14 year olds.  We expect our new Vicar will spend a day or so a week working in schools and with other parishes on this.
  • Creative and fun – this person will have an appreciation of all of the different ministries that make church – music, flowers, crafts and care for the environment to name a few.
  • Community-minded – the parsonage occupies a corner of this very friendly and sociable area. The church and church hall are often the ‘hub’ of social activities.  Most worshippers regularly stay on for coffee and cake after services.
  • Self-sufficient – there is no parish office and no paid staff at St Philip’s. The vicar and PCC share responsibility for the buildings and finances, as well as the administration of the parish.  Volunteers in the congregation offer their time and skills for projects ranging from plumbing to website design; but the vicar will need to manage their own communications and diary and many other ‘domestic’ matters relating to the church.

ABOUT US

St Philip’s draws its congregation from all over Reigate and neighbouring Redhill. Sunday services typically attract 50-60 adults and 20-25 children, but much larger numbers attend Easter and Christmas services. Some people have worshipped here for decades, others join from our drop-in coffee morning or First Steps parent and toddler group.

St Bede’s ecumenical secondary school in Redhill offers 135 foundation places to Anglican Church members each year, stipulating regular attendance of one parent for 3 years. Some of these parents may have not attended church regularly since their own childhood but many quickly become involved – joining rotas, becoming PCC members and donating their time and skills.
