The role of Rector designate of the Isle of Ely Villages Benefice is a significant post, caring for the people and growing the mission of these parishes in the Deanery of Ely. These villages have been working together as part of deanery planning and look forward to working with a Team Rector who will help them to develop this further and flourish in their distinctive mission and ministries.

You will find:

  • a cluster of diverse parishes in lush countryside
  • Close to Ely, 15 miles from Cambridge
  • With enthusiastic, capable leaders
  • Varied traditions, and warm relationships
  • Open doors to 8 schools and academies
  • Excellent rectory in a charming village
  • a welcoming and hopeful deanery,
  • an expectant diocese with new bishop soon to arrive.
You will have diocesan support to recruit a Team Vicar to work alongside you in this benefice. You will be supported in your role by a wealth of ordained and lay colleagues from the benefice and the wider deanery and cathedral and diocesan community. Our new diocesan office sits within this benefice creating a nerve centre of central support. Deanery chapter is a warm and resourceful place. There are oases of spiritual sustenance throughout the Deanery and Diocese.

We are excited to invite applications for this remarkable post. It offers an exceptional opportunity for a priest with gifts in ministry oversight and mission development. You will be able to appoint a colleague, help train curates, and shape the culture of a new benefice spanning 11 villages at the heart of our diocese, close to the Cathedral City of Ely.

We seek an experienced priest, who is:
  • Confident in God and unfailingly kind with people.
  • Inspiring in their teaching and committed to lifelong learning.
  • Forward thinking in mission, able to guide our parishes to develop their mission initiatives.
  • Collaborative - a team leader, with a track record of developing healthy teams and releasing capability.
  • Humble - able to balance high visibility within our communities whilst still enabling others to shine.
  • Relatable – able to win the trust & friendship of our rich and diverse communities.
  • Self-starting, resilient, courageous & hospitable.

Safer Recruitment in the Diocese of Ely

The Diocese of Ely is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults, and expects all employees to undertake safeguarding checks and training relevant to their role and to adhere to the Church of England’s safeguarding policies and procedures . Therefore, this position is subject to an enhanced disclosure from the DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service).

Our Diocese:
The Diocese of Ely stretches from Cambridge to Peterborough and out towards the coastal areas of West Norfolk. It houses 3/4 million people, which will rise to 1 million in the next 15 years. This area buzzes with energy from the academic, business and medical excellence of Cambridge University to the rich agricultural areas of Huntingdon, Fenland and Norfolk.

Despite the presence of a world leading university, Cambridgeshire is not all affluent. Towns and cities have pockets of poverty and low attainment. Rural areas can be isolated and insular. The churches are strong in some places, but there is much work to be done.

The Diocese of Ely is a good place to live and work: stable finances, good housing, inclusive and warm hearted bishops, coupled with a rich diversity of benefices in all traditions make this a place that clergy stay once they have discovered us. We have just over 100 incumbent status clergy, with a strong Diocesan team, and a real emphasis on lay development and training. We have no plans to reduce clergy numbers.

The Diocesan Bishop has moved on, but the diocese remains on a steady course, as it seeks our next Diocesan. Our Mission Strategy, Ely 2025, devolves much decision making to the parishes, benefices and deaneries, so that clergy are able to innovate, take risks and build alliances for the sake of the Kingdom of God and the good of our communities. We welcome applications from clergy who are prepared to work collaboratively and faithfully. We will enable you to flourish and grow in ministry, whilst maintaining a sensible work life balance.
We have a small but growing number of clergy from GMH backgrounds and welcome more applicants from GMH backgrounds. We are a diocese with one of the largest proportions of women in incumbent status roles, and welcome more.
COME AND JOIN US.
