Introduction
Interim Minister (Priest in Charge)
Hutton Cranswick w Skerne, Watton and Beswick and Nafferton w Wansford
God has a future for our churches and we are seeking an Interim Minister to join us as we discover the shape this should take. We care deeply for our villages and seek to be churches that serve them well and reach out to them with the love of God. We recognise that some change is necessary in how we organise ministry, structure our two benefices and find the money to fund it all. We are seeking a Minister who will lead us in this process and enjoy ministering in this beautiful part of the Yorkshire Wolds.
We know that ministry belongs to the whole people of God, and we are committed to sharing with you in this next chapter of our life with God. We have an active Ministry Team, a part time administrator and many committed people. God has blessed us in many ways and we long to see our resources released and used effectively.
As part of the diocesan vision of ‘Living Christ’s Story’ there is an imaginative vision for supporting and, where necessary, re-shaping the lives of our churches. The diocese has designated us as ‘revitalise benefices’ and will be providing extra resources and support to help this process. As a church family we are committed to this vision and are praying for a new Minister to lead us forward into the plans we know God has for us.
Main Responsibilities
- To be a visible presence in the benefices, exhibiting an understanding of rural ministry and a pastoral ministry both inside and outside of the churches
- To set a vision for the six churches that enable them to embrace their future with confidence
- To lead collaboratively, developing the Ministry Team and the PCCs, and working well with deanery and ecumenical colleagues
- To be pro-active in the encouragement of generosity in giving and the maximising of other income streams, without these distracting from other ministries
- To grow vocations, both lay and, where appropriate, ordained
- To simplify structures, including the merging of Nafferton and Wansford parishes, the exploration of creating Joint PCCs and the consideration of creating one benefice
- To deepen collaboration and the sharing of resources across the six churches
- To bring healing and reconciliation where past hurts and frustrations remain
Person Spec
- A Priest who is a visible presence in the villages and has the ability and the personality to communicate, to listen and exchange conversation with all ages.
- A knowledge and understanding of Rural Parish Ministry with a long term vision for growing the Kingdom recognising rural churches are different to town/city ones.
- A strategic/visionary thinker who, with us, will discern the way forward during the first three years of their Interim Ministry. This will include priorities for change and a plan for our future to include our mission and stewardship.
- A good communicator who is skilled at leading and equipping people and the proven ability to manage change effectively and to spearhead new ventures, whilst being empathetic to peoples’ situations.
- A desire for pastoral work, with a focus on meeting the needs of all in the parishes both inside and outside our churches. Able to bring comfort and reassurance and ideally having a good sense of humour!
- Recognition of the necessity to lead the Ministry Team, work in the Deanery and with Churches of other denominations, and in so doing help the congregations to explore more about their own Christian gifting and faith as they live Christ’s story.
- A desire to rekindle the work with the schools and other youth organisations and thus to encourage young people to explore their Christian faith and ultimately to persuade and motivate them into the Church family.
- Able to build a relationship with community elders and to oversee the links with care homes locally.
About Us
The Diocese of York, led and guided by Archbishop Stephen Cottrell, takes in much of North and East Yorkshire. As the largest diocese in England, geographically, the area is very diverse, featuring a multitude of needs and opportunities. This includes the bustling urban centres of York, Hull and Middlesbrough, the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors National Park, and the incomparable Yorkshire Coast; as well as areas of deprivation in some of our urban and smaller rural and coastal communities.
Our mission and ministry relies on thousands of people - lay and ordained, volunteer and paid. Our diocesan teams provide a wide range of support services to our mission and ministry, including lifelong learning for ministry, the care of church buildings, and safeguarding. Together, we are striving to be a people who are ‘Living Christ’s Story’. We want to be a simpler, bolder, humbler church which in its diversity reflects the communities it serves. We are bringing renewed focus and fresh energy to achieving our aims:
- Becoming more like Christ
- Reaching those we currently don't
- Growing in discipleship, influence and numbers
- Transforming our finances and structures
Our approach is aligned with a commitment to the best of our parochial inheritance, to the poorest communities, and to the financial realities we face.
Under current immigration rules, it is not generally possible for us to appoint clergy who are not already eligible to work in the UK.
