Introduction
Missing Generations Project Leader and Priest in Charge St George’s Everton (3 year fixed term post)
The Missing Generations Project is a partnership between St George’s Everton and the neighbouring parish of St Peter’s with St John Chrysostom, funded on a fixed term basis by the Church of England Strategic Development Fund. This radical growth project aims to see a step change in the number of new disciples in the 11-29 year-old age range and by doing so become a ‘resource’ (people, money, ideas, training, learning from mistakes etc.) to the wider church in in the north of the city. The target is to grow by over 100 new disciples by the end of 2026.
We believe that new spaces are needed beyond the traditional ‘spaces’ of the Sunday morning services and the congregations that form around them, that are diverse, flexible and contextually appropriate. We don’t believe a new ‘one size fits all’ worshipping community is right for our context, but rather multiple, smaller, worshipping communities led by small teams of leaders- supported, trained and mentored by the clergy and project team. We envision that each community would form around a particular distinctive e.g. families of SEND youths, gamers, young families of children at a particular school, focussing predominantly on the ‘Generation Z’ cohort and establishing their own forms of worship, discipleship, fellowship, leadership and mission. Each community will be a ‘church’ in its own right and each community will be part of a bigger overall network including the traditional worshipping communities, which together will be the (Anglican) Church in Everton.
There is a huge opportunity to help us to step out in faith to reach those who are missing and to develop, encourage and build vibrant expressions of faith and hope at the heart of our communities. We need someone who is creative and a self-starter, someone with the ability to quickly step into the implementation phase of this project, someone who is a natural team player as well as a team leader.
This post also gives you a parish base as the interim priest in charge of St George’s, Everton. St Georges is rooted and established in the local community of Everton, in the heart of Liverpool’s inner city, with a landmark building and close relationships with the adjacent church school. The existing congregation is small but hope-filled and Jesus-centred, and are looking for someone who will support and nurture them through the inevitable changes that this project will bring and be a leader in teaching and preaching the faith.
We are looking for someone who can bring this vision to life and will lead us into the future, through networking, collaboration and being a motivational and pastoral leader. It will be important to quickly establish a good working relationship with the project co-lead and vicar of the neighbouring parishes, the Revd Mikey Ferguson, and we will be looking for someone with a complementary skill set as the team aspect of this role is critical to its success.
If you think you could be the person to lead us in this exciting chapter, please look through our Parish Profile to see if God is calling you to this post. A supporting Project document is available on request. We also encourage potential applicants to visit, meeting the co-lead, Revd Mikey Ferguson, and Project Manager, Clare Bedford.
