Introduction

We are seeking a compassionate and motivated Development Worker with a strong background in the social issues of poverty alleviation, homelessness and other related issues in deprived communities to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will work closely with marginalized communities, charities, and social organisations to provide support, develop programs, and advocate for individuals and families experiencing poverty or homelessness.

This role seeks to equip and empower the important work carried out in the parishes of the Diocese of Southwark to respond in loving service to those gripped by issues of material and social poverty, homelessness as well as those who are Refugees and Asylum Seekers, and to seek to transform unjust systems.

Main duties include:

To encourage the development of local churches’ Christian response to poverty across the whole of the diocese. To support parishes in their response to homelessness and working with refugees.

To identify and link with existing community groups working on poverty, deprivation, homelessness and refugees (referred to herein as Social Issues). 

To help parishes to work together and with local community groups to encourage collaboration and partnership. To support a holistic view of the five marks of mission with an emphasis on the third and fourth marks 

For this role we are looking for someone with:

  • Experience of working in social issues, with a focus on homelessness, poverty, or charity work. 
  • Relevant knowledge and experience in relation to the following: e.g. community work, work with church-based groups, leading a project, and work with the voluntary sector – particularly with organisations engaged with vulnerable and disadvantaged groups   
  • Strong understanding of poverty alleviation strategies, and housing policies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Experience in case management, program coordination, and community outreach.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, challenging environment.
  • Personal commitment to the Christian faith – a living faith that informs your understanding of responding to poverty
