Introduction
About the Bishop
The Diocese of London is the group of Church of England organisations located in London north of the River Thames and covers eighteen London Boroughs. It is made up of parishes, schools, chaplaincies, missional communities and other organisations, which are united by their common Christian faith. The Diocese is overseen by the Bishop of London, assisted by Area Bishops, Archdeacons and senior staff, and administrated by the staff of the London Diocesan Fund (LDF).
About the role
The Bishop of London wishes to appoint a Chaplain. The post is a distinctive opportunity for an imaginative and creative priest with a thoughtful outlook and a deep faith to support the Bishop in her episcopal ministry.
The Diocese of London is committed to creating and sustaining a diverse and inclusive workforce which represents our context and wider community. We are aware that those of Global Majority Heritage/United Kingdom Minority Ethnic (GMH/UKME), women, and disabled people are currently under-represented among our clergy and workforce, and we particularly encourage applications from those with the relevant skills and experience that will increase this representation.
The ideal individual will be a natural team player, yet with the ability to work independently, being proactive in anticipating the Bishop’s needs in relation to the considerable demands of her diary. The Chaplain will be adept at balancing forward planning with the urgent and immediate. This requires excellent forward planning and taking the initiative and necessary steps to ensure that the Bishop is always fully prepared. It involves keeping a keen eye on the diary, the ability to anticipate and act on the Bishop’s needs, and liaising as appropriate and in a timely manner with everybody involved, including the other members of the Bishop’s Team who will be involved in providing support.
The Chaplain will have excellent interpersonal, administrative and communication skills and a high degree of cultural competence. Numerous meetings and events are held in The Old Deanery, and the Chaplain will have a warm and hospitable manner, playing a key part in offering a generous welcome.
The Chaplain will also need to be proactive in supporting the Bishop in ensuring that The Old Deanery is consistently a place of warm welcome and generous hospitality for all who visit or take part in events there. This requires the Chaplain to be present and imaginatively attentive to the many opportunities which arise, both planned and unexpected, to extend this ministry of welcome.
