Introduction

The Headland Benefice, Bridlington Deanery
We are a new benefice – excited about what God is doing amongst us already and looking to our future with expectation about what is to come. Three of our parishes have joined with a neighbouring one and this enables us to appoint a full time Incumbent to oversee our new benefice. We have already begun this shared journey and together wish to deepen our commitment to mission and to discipleship. We cherish much that we already have but alongside making the most of what we have already, we also know that we need to embrace change.
We don’t expect our Vicar to do everything and we recognise the demands of rural ministry. Our churches all have committed lay leadership and there is a large ministry team of lay ministers and retired clergy.  We will pray for you, support you practically and enjoy sharing in ministry with you – and we will also share with you some of the most beautiful coastline in Yorkshire!

Main Responsibilities
  1. To further the work of establishing the new benefice, identifying how collaboration and the sharing of resources can further God’s mission and enhance the life of the churches
  2. To engage in the life of the villages, in the schools and with all ages
  3. To strategically lead the churches into growth, using different approaches for each context
  4. To share your life of prayer and faith, energising, encouraging and inspiring others
  5. To lead the Ministry Team and the wider group of lay and retired clergy colleagues, co-ordinating bringing ministry, delegating well and enabling a variety of gifts to flourish
  6. To further the attempts to simplify governance structures and identify new ways to simplify church life
  7. To deepen the commitment to generous giving, ensuring the benefice covers its direct costs of ministry in the pledge it makes in 2026
  8. To actively engage in deanery life, supporting the implementation of the deanery plan

About Us
The Diocese of York, led and guided by Archbishop Stephen Cottrell, takes in much of North and East Yorkshire. As the largest diocese in England, geographically, the area is very diverse, featuring a multitude of needs and opportunities. This includes the bustling urban centres of York, Hull and Middlesbrough, the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors National Park, and the incomparable Yorkshire Coast; as well as areas of deprivation in some of our urban and smaller rural and coastal communities.
Our mission and ministry relies on thousands of people - lay and ordained, volunteer and paid. Our diocesan teams provide a wide range of support services to our mission and ministry, including lifelong learning for ministry, the care of church buildings, and safeguarding. Together, we are striving to be a people who are ‘Living Christ’s Story’. We want to be a simpler, bolder, humbler church which in its diversity reflects the communities it serves. We are bringing renewed focus and fresh energy to achieving our aims:
  • Becoming more like Christ
  • Reaching those we currently don't
  • Growing in discipleship, influence and numbers
  • Transforming our finances and structures
Our approach is aligned with a commitment to the best of our parochial inheritance, to the poorest communities, and to the financial realities we face.
Under current immigration rules, it is not generally possible for us to appoint clergy who are not already eligible to work in the UK.

Informal enquiries are welcome:
